Making a Mallet that Melts Hearts & Breaks Stuff
Making a Mallet to sell has long been on my to-do list after having so many questions about them over the years. In this video, you'll watch me design, prototype and manufacture what I consider to be one of the most helpful tools for hand cut joinery and assembly.

🕵️♂️ WHO AM I?:
My name is Matt Estlea, I'm a 27 year old Woodworker from Basingstoke in England and my aim is to make your woodworking less s***.
I come from 5 years tuition at Rycotewood Furniture Centre with a further 1 year working as an Artist in Residence at the Sylva Foundation, which is where I began growing my business. I then returned to Rycotewood to teach Evening Classes for 2 Years, while also teaching City and Guilds Furniture Making for 3 years. They were some long 12 hour days!
In September, 2021. I resigned from teaching at the school to focus on my own business.
In addition to all that studying and teaching during the week, I occupied my weekends working at Axminster Tools and Machinery in Basingstoke. For 5 years, I helped customers with purchasing tools, demonstrated in stores and events, and gained extensive knowledge about a variety of tools and brands. I discontinued this job role in 2019 to focus on teaching at Rycotewood and my own business.
During the week, I film woodworking projects, tutorials, reviews and a viewer favourite 'Tool Duel' where I compare two competitive manufacturers tools against one another to find out which is best. I also have a Free Online Woodworking School which you should definitely check out!

One piece!!!!!
Thats insanely beautiful!
Metal lathe?
I don't do any woodworking but I want one anyway.
It's always on the last piece/attempt so next time have less pieces lol
Or you could just use the lathe and some sandpaper... na leta build somthing that will probably kill someone
Did you try a formed bit (like how chess pieces are made ) to be able to cut it all in one pass? That just didn't work?
Slow is smooth Smooth is fast Keep your fingers and dont "speed run" any thing that has sharp pokey cutty stabby things
Is the oil enough for finish?
I’m sure I said it at the time Matt, but, that was a STUNNING build. !!!!🎉❤
Try african padauk
I didn't seen your videos long time. Wow. U look now like Jesus.
Very interested in how it will sell. My first assumption is that the intended market would already be making their own mallets
Worked with hard wood for a aquarium, great stuff but sucks cutting to fit 😢
Yes you never heard of sandpaper😅
Thats why soft wood is to be used for the mallet head.
What's the damage on them maye
I think I understand
Better not light a match in there
Precision lasers.
How much is 200lbs in us currency
Those mallets are adorable
*Chef's kiss*.
Stunning! I especially love the simple design, allowing us to enjoy the grain.
Should've consulted real machinists, metal lathe cnc guys
Realistically you should be using a wood that is very soft for the mallet heads so that the mallet is damaged before the work is
Crazy runout on that fucker😂
I bought a mallet years ago from Kings Fine Woodworking with handle and head made of lignum vitae. This was just after they banned import. I must admit that I never use it because it's such a beautiful piece.
Probably the best explanation I've found so far! 🎉 Now I know which chisels I already have and what I'm missing.
great job !
Expensive South African hardwood…. Good choice.
Nice work bro. Beautiful wood and clean simple peice.
Made a bat next to
Yo where can I get one at
Love it. Soooo real - I'm not a craftsman but even doing simple fixes at home I spend most of the time looking for tools I had in my hand just a minute before, dropping stuff of the bench or hitting something with my head. Glue remains on my hands - a must. BTW: as for the card you used to spread the glue - have you been to Poland?
That was entertaining. Of course, Rob can do that every time. Still, you got me beat by a mile. Nice work!
Still a bit spendy for hobbyists, but prices are coming down. And there's loads of folks using these to start a profitable little side hustle making all manner of personalized items.
Wow, really beautiful. Well done
Wasn’t this laser a pain in the butt?
I do and don't want one of these hammers. I do want one because they're cool as fuck. I don't want one because I'd rather just have the blank to make my own.
It's totally hunky dory, but it would magnificent if you or someone else hand carved some intricate design on the outside
I would just sand it
So why are all those heads flat? Router was totally unnecessary btw, you just needed a static tool that worked on the arc, like a ball turning jig.
No mention of cost of electricity for heating the wood in the oven for 5 days. I’d estimate 5 x 24 x £0.3 = £36!
Saying the wood is known for its weight and density is basically saying the same thing twice. Probably meant hardness and density.
I'd try a milling machine with a rotary table if you can. Use a radius bit, and you probably want to run it fast
Most Wasps are actually pretty cool and curious creatures. They usually only sting if you attack or surprise them. They will let you pet them before a cat would. 😂
It’s been fun watching the whole process leading up to this, Matt. And sometimes scary 😂 Watching the effort, time and craftsmanship going into each and everyone, I have absolutely no doubt that they are easily worth the money you’re selling them for. Unfortunately, I was too slow to sign up for the pre-order this time, but hopefully in the future, I’ll be able to get one to go with my marking knife. As a random side note, are there any other tools for the future you would like to produce?
I like your old hair style
How do I go about purchasing a mallet? N how much does it cost
He has a link to his shop in the description on his long form videos.
