Making a Mallet that Melts Hearts & Breaks Stuff
Making a Mallet to sell has long been on my to-do list after having so many questions about them over the years. In this video, you'll watch me design, prototype and manufacture what I consider to be one of the most helpful tools for hand cut joinery and assembly.

🕵️‍♂️ WHO AM I?:
My name is Matt Estlea, I'm a 27 year old Woodworker from Basingstoke in England and my aim is to make your woodworking less s***.
I come from 5 years tuition at Rycotewood Furniture Centre with a further 1 year working as an Artist in Residence at the Sylva Foundation, which is where I began growing my business. I then returned to Rycotewood to teach Evening Classes for 2 Years, while also teaching City and Guilds Furniture Making for 3 years. They were some long 12 hour days!
In September, 2021. I resigned from teaching at the school to focus on my own business.
In addition to all that studying and teaching during the week, I occupied my weekends working at Axminster Tools and Machinery in Basingstoke. For 5 years, I helped customers with purchasing tools, demonstrated in stores and events, and gained extensive knowledge about a variety of tools and brands. I discontinued this job role in 2019 to focus on teaching at Rycotewood and my own business.
During the week, I film woodworking projects, tutorials, reviews and a viewer favourite 'Tool Duel' where I compare two competitive manufacturers tools against one another to find out which is best. I also have a Free Online Woodworking School which you should definitely check out!

Realistically you should be using a wood that is very soft for the mallet heads so that the mallet is damaged before the work is

I bought a mallet years ago from Kings Fine Woodworking with handle and head made of lignum vitae. This was just after they banned import. I must admit that I never use it because it's such a beautiful piece.

Love it. Soooo real - I'm not a craftsman but even doing simple fixes at home I spend most of the time looking for tools I had in my hand just a minute before, dropping stuff of the bench or hitting something with my head. Glue remains on my hands - a must. BTW: as for the card you used to spread the glue - have you been to Poland?

So why are all those heads flat? Router was totally unnecessary btw, you just needed a static tool that worked on the arc, like a ball turning jig.

No mention of cost of electricity for heating the wood in the oven for 5 days. I’d estimate 5 x 24 x £0.3 = £36!

Saying the wood is known for its weight and density is basically saying the same thing twice. Probably meant hardness and density.

Most Wasps are actually pretty cool and curious creatures. They usually only sting if you attack or surprise them. They will let you pet them before a cat would. 😂

It’s been fun watching the whole process leading up to this, Matt. And sometimes scary 😂 Watching the effort, time and craftsmanship going into each and everyone, I have absolutely no doubt that they are easily worth the money you’re selling them for. Unfortunately, I was too slow to sign up for the pre-order this time, but hopefully in the future, I’ll be able to get one to go with my marking knife. As a random side note, are there any other tools for the future you would like to produce?
